From 17 to 20 June 2024, the UK Secondment under the HEPSSA project brought academics and professionals from Sub-Saharan Africa to the University of the West of England (UWE) and Cardiff University (CU). This pivotal event focused on fostering innovation, advancing sustainability, and strengthening global academic industry collaborations within the fields of engineering and the built environment. Bridging Knowledge Across Continents This secondment was designed to showcase best practices in integrating technological innovations and sustainability principles into education and research. It also provided an opportunity for delegates to learn from UK institutions’ state-of-the- art facilities and teaching methodologies, emphasising collaborative approaches to addressing global challenges.
Highlights of the Secondment
Welcome and Curriculum Design Workshop (17 June)
The week began with a workshop at UWE, where delegates explored innovative approaches to curriculum design. The focus was on embedding sustainability and technological innovation into educational modules. Discussions emphasized:
- The integration of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into curricula.
- Strategies to make education more practical and aligned with industry needs.
2. Exploring Advanced Facilities at UWE (18 June)
The second day featured a tour of UWE’s advanced facilities, including the Robotics Lab and Civil Engineering Laboratories. Delegates also attended:
