From 8 to 11 April 2024, the Council for Mineral Technology (Mintek) hosted the Africa Secondment, a key initiative under the HEPSSA project aimed at advancing sustainable development and technological innovation in engineering and built environment education. This secondment brought together delegates from universities across sub-Saharan Africa to collaborate, learn, and exchange knowledge with industry experts. This was possible because of our partners and supporters and the excellent team behind this.
A hub of technological advancement
Mintek, renowned for its cutting-edge research and innovation in mineral processing and metallurgy, provided the perfect setting for this transformative secondment. Delegates were exposed to advanced technologies and practices designed to address some of the region’s most pressing challenges, including sustainable housing, energy efficiency, and resource management.
Key activities and highlights
Welcome and collaboration kick-off
The secondment began with an engaging opening session where participants were briefed on project progress and expectations. This collaborative kick-off set the tone for a productive week, emphasizing the shared goal of integrating sustainability and innovation into academic curricula and industry practices.
Visits to innovation hubs and laboratories
Over the course of four days, delegates explored:
- The Eric Molobi Housing Innovation Hub, where they witnessed the groundbreaking Net-Zero Energy House and other innovative housing prototypes. These examples showcased how advanced construction technologies can address housing affordability and sustainability.
- Mintek’s state-of-the-art laboratories and pilot plants, offering insights into mineral processing technologies and metallurgical research.
University of Johannesburg tour
Participants visited UJ’s Sustainable Human Settlement and Construction Research Centre, experiencing firsthand the potential of technologies like 3D printing in revolutionizing construction practices. The tour also highlighted virtual reality applications for infrastructure assessment and design.
Networking and knowledge sharing
Throughout the secondment, participants engaged in dynamic discussions with industry leaders and academic peers, fostering connections that will drive future collaborations. The week concluded with a project design workshop, focusing on actionable steps to integrate learnings into curricula and research initiatives.
